Improving New Zealand’s economy

Tourism is New Zealand’s top exporter generating NZ$6.5 billion in annual foreign exchange.

There are 10 major publicly-listed tourism companies and 13,500-18,000 small to medium sized tourism enterprises in New Zealand. These businesses employ over 9% of New Zealand’s workforce.

Tourism contributes 10% to New Zealand’s GDP and provides a total of 184,800 full-time jobs. Each day, New Zealand’s tourism industry earns approximately NZ$59 million. On average, each international visitor spends NZ$2,771 on their holiday in New Zealand.

Positive outlook

Looking to the future, the Ministry of Tourism has implemented the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015. Their vision is to cement tourism’s position as the leading contributor to a sustainable New Zealand economy by 2015. With specific goals and action plans, the Ministry is dedicated to expanding the tourism industry.
