Insights into New Zealand’s aquaculture sector

Insights into New Zealand’s aquaculture sector

Covering 4.4 million km2, New Zealand has the 4th largest commercial marine environment in the world. The fastest growing sector within the seafood industry, New Zealand’s aquaculture produce is exported to 78 countries.

The New Zealand Aquaculture Council aims to triple the value of aquaculture production to NZ$1 billion by 2025.

Our top species

GreenshellTM Mussels account for 77% of New Zealand’s aquaculture exports. According to Aquaculture New Zealand, NZ$204.3 million worth of GreenshellTM Mussels were exported in 2008.

King Salmon and Pacific Oysters are also major contributors to New Zealand’s aquaculture industry. King Salmon sales were NZ$44 million in 2008, and New Zealand exported NZ$16.9 million worth of Pacific Oysters in 2008.

A healthy marine environment

Aquaculture is managed by industry bodies and regional councils. Furthermore, the Crown’s Treaty of Waitangi entitles Maori tribes to 20% of pre-existing and future marine farm space. Investors often collaborate with these organisations to establish their aquaculture farm.

New Zealand’s geographic isolation and stringent biosecurity policies have allowed its marine farming environment to prosper. New Zealand is dedicated to preserving its pristine marine environment in order to meet global demand for high quality seafood products.
